Points to Consider
If you plan to return to India after studying medicine in the Caribbean, here are the key factors to consider:
- NMC Recognition (National Medical Commission)
- Ensure that the Caribbean medical university you choose is recognized by the NMC. If it is not recognized, you may not be eligible to practice in India.
- You can check the NMC’s list of recognized foreign medical institutions on their official website.
- Qualifying FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination)
- Indian students who earn their MBBS degree from foreign medical universities (including Caribbean universities) must clear the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) to practice in India.
- FMGE is conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) and has a pass percentage of around 15–25%, so preparation is crucial.
- Upcoming NExT Exam (National Exit Test)
- FMGE is expected to be replaced by NExT (National Exit Test) in the coming years. This will be mandatory for both Indian and foreign medical graduates to get a medical license in India.
- Internship Requirement in India
- After passing FMGE (or NExT in the future), you will have to complete a 1-year internship in an NMC-approved hospital in India before getting full medical registration.
- Choosing the Right Caribbean University for Easy Transition
- Some top Caribbean medical schools have strong curricula aligned with FMGE/NExT preparation, increasing the chances of clearing the exam in India.
- Universities with strong clinical training and hospital exposure are better for Indian students returning home.
