IELTS
IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System. It is a standardised test designed to assess the English language proficiency of individuals who want to study or work in English-speaking environments/countries. The test is widely recognised and accepted by educational institutions, employers, and immigration authorities in English-speaking countries. There are two main types of IELTS tests: Academic, for those planning to study at a higher education institution, and General Training, which is often required for immigration purposes or those seeking work experience in an English-speaking country. The test evaluates the four language skills:
1. Listening – Candidates must listen to recorded conversations – monologues and answer the questions based on the information they hear in the audio.
2. Reading – Candidates must read various texts and answer questions assessing their understanding of the topic and ability to analyse and interpret information.
3. Writing – Writing Skill is divided into two tasks:
– Task 1(Graphical Presentation): Candidates must describe visual information, such as types of charts or graphs.
– Task 2(Essay): Candidates must write an Essay responding to a given topic.
4. Speaking – It involves a face-to-face interview with an examiner. Candidates are assessed on their ability to communicate effectively, use a range of vocabulary and grammar structures, and express their ideas coherently.

TOEFL
TOEFL stands for the Test of English as a Foreign Language. It is another widely recognised standardised test of English language proficiency. Like IELTS, TOEFL is used by universities, colleges, and employers to assess the English language skills of non-native English speakers. The test measures the ability to use and understand English academically. TOEFL scores are reported on a scale of 0 to 120, with each of the four sections receiving a scaled score. TOEFL is often preferred by institutions in North America, while IELTS is more commonly accepted in other English-speaking regions. The choice between TOEFL and IELTS may depend on the requirements of the institution or organisation to which the individual is applying.
The key components of the TOEFL test:
1. Reading – Test-takers read academic passages and answer questions to demonstrate their ability to understand and analyse written content.
2. Listening – Test-takers listen to lectures, discussions, and conversations in audio to answer the questions based on the information they listen to in the continuous audio.
3. Speaking – This test requires test-takers to express their opinions on familiar topics and respond to tasks that involve speaking based on reading and listening prompts.
4. Writing – The test is divided into two parts:
– The first task requires test-takers to write an essay based on their reading and listening experiences.
– The second task involves writing an essay expressing their opinion on a topic.
• Regular Feedback: Provide feedback on each skill to students after every practice lecture and highlight areas of improvement.
